From Benchwarmer to European Champion: 2 Changes That Changed Everything

  • Marko Radanovic

When people ask me what really changed in my case—how I went from sitting on the bench to becoming a European Champion—I don’t talk about “motivation” or some secret drill.

It came down to two decisions.

1) I removed the option of missing practice

I told myself one sentence: “From now on, I will never miss a practice.”

That mindset did something powerful: it made life simple.
No debating. No excuses. No “maybe tomorrow.” or "I am tired". Just: I train.

And in water polo, that’s everything. If you’re not in the water consistently, there’s no progress—especially as a young player. That’s also how you truly polish your fundamentals: body position, eggbeater, passing, shooting, awareness… all of it becomes sharper when you show up every day.

2) I took full responsibility for what happens in the pool

This was the second shift: no more blaming.

Bad pass? Then I didn’t communicate enough or move well enough.
Ref makes a bad call? I keep playing—and next time I make it so obvious that the correct call is a no-brainer.
Didn’t get the ball? Then I didn’t demand it, didn’t create separation, didn’t earn it.

Once you own everything, you stop wasting energy—and you start improving very, very fast.

I can’t tell you how to become the world’s #1 player of all time.
But I can show you how to master the fundamentals—so you give yourself a real chance to keep playing after 15, and be professional or collegiate water Polo player (if you want), and build the discipline to achieve whatever you want in life.
