5 on 6 Positioning

This course covers the fundamentals of 5-on-6 (man-down) defensive positioning — the essential setup every team needs to master to stop power plays. You’ll learn the basic responsibilities for each position (set, wings, drivers, and more), how to read the offense, and how to move as a unit to protect the goal.

In the course, I’ve included examples of all positions from real gameplay situations, so you can see where each player should be and why. The full video is around 12 minutes long, but here you’ll get specific excerpts focused on individual positions — with clear time stamps so you can jump directly to the role you’re studying.

Basic 5-on-6 Positioning Overview:

  • Set (point): Positioned in the middle front, controlling passing lanes to the center and directing the defense.

  • Wings: Positioned on either side of the set, blocking cross passes and pressing the shooter.

  • Drivers (or posts): Closest to the goal line, covering the inside passing lanes and pressuring quick shots from the posts.

  • Rotation & Communication: Constant movement to close shooting angles, block passing lanes, and back up teammates.

By the end of this course, you’ll know exactly where to be, how to move, and how to work together to shut down a 6-on-5 attack.
